A fascinating look at not only an intriguing area and time period, but an engaging reflection of family relationships
Synopsis
The saga continues. In book number two of the Somerville trilogy, the period from 1945 to 1962 is covered. Where ‘Willow Grove Abbey’ ended, ‘St. James Road’ begins, drawing the reader back into the imperfect orbit of the Somerville family. Sophia has begun a new life.
The war has ended, it is 1945, and England has begun the healing process, after five years of tumult. This second novel in the Somerville trilogy delves into the aftereffects of World War II, and focuses attention on those who are left to carry on, as England struggles to recover. The world is changing rapidly, and so is Sophia’s life. Leaving behind her beloved childhood home, Willow Grove Abbey, Sophia and her dearly beloved husband, Dr. Spencer Stanton set out on a new adventure, with a move to Tunbridge Wells, and a lovely old Victorian house on St. James Road, along with a new way of living.
It doesn’t take long for Sophia to realize that just because the war has ended, the turmoil and heartache have not. She may not be living at Willow Grove Abbey any longer, but the mayhem and chaos persist. Her parents, the Earl and Countess Somerville, discover that not all woes can be erased with money and power; Sophia realizes that as she develops meaningful values of her own, manipulation and lies will cause her to fight to maintain her own identity. Sorrow and anguish abound, and as soon as one misery is behind, new distress appears.
Edwina has moved to New York, but she has not disappeared from Sophia’s life. Nor has her son, Kippy. Sophia continues with her journey of growth, and Isabella has become an adult. Can Sophia save ‘Willow Grove Abbey’ from the unscrupulous intentions of Edwina’s family? Old secrets once again come to the surface as Edwina casts her shadow upon Sophia’s existence. Written in the first person, the reader is led further down the road through more serendipitous happenings’, and the now familiar characters are stunned by the Fate that may lay in store for them. ‘St. James Road’ is definitely a page-turner, and a must-read for anyone who loved Willow Grove Abbey.
Can they overcome the past to find a brighter future together?
Major Jack Novak has never failed to meet a challenge--until he meets army nurse Lieutenant Ruth Doherty. When Jack lands in the army hospital after a plane crash, he makes winning Ruth's heart a top priority mission. But he has his work cut out for him. Not only is Ruth focused on her work in order to support her orphaned siblings back home, she carries a shameful secret that keeps her from giving her heart to any man. Can Jack break down her defenses? Or are they destined to go their separate ways?
A Memory Between Us is the second book in the WINGS OF GLORY series, which follows the three Novak brothers, B-17 bomber pilots with the US Eighth Air Force stationed in England during World War II.
War love..............romance
The most complicated thing about Lt. Evelyn Blake's Army nursing career is that she has to tell her parents that she's accepted a dashing English pilot's hand in marriage. But when Evelyn's transport plane crashes just hours before one of the biggest operations of World War Two, Evelyn Blake finds herself Missing In Action. Evelyn Blake's adventure finds her forced into Operation Market Garden, where she teams up with a rag tag band of American paratroopers and their brave but infuriating Lieutenant to escape the Germans. When Evelyn returns back to her own unit, she is ordered to forget the men who saved her life.
Missing in Action is a wartime romance that spans the war in Europe. Lt. Evelyn Blake is a plucky flight nurse, who's experienced in war, but naive in love. Her fiancé, Victor Wellington, is her ideal prince charming, both a Lord and a dashing RAF pilot. Is he any match for Lt. Patrick Mitchell, All-American officer and sometimes gentleman, who finds Evelyn hiding from the Germans in a cafe in Holland? Rumors swirl. Did Lt. Evelyn Blake really kill five Germans? How about those two marriage certificates? Only Lt. Mitchell and his men know for sure.
Flawless
Marianne de Pierres' epic series, THE SENTIENTS OF ORION, has been called "a grand space opera" (Times Literary Supplement) and "brilliant in all senses of the word" (Sean Williams). All four books were shortlisted for the prestigious Aurealis Award, with the final book winning for Best Novel.
DARK SPACE
Book One of The Sentients of Orion
On the arid mining planet of Araldis, Baronessa Mira Fedor finds herself on the run from the authorities, her life in tatters and her future stolen. Araldis itself buckles under the onslaught of a ruthlessly executed invasion. None of this is coincidence. The more Mira discovers about her planet's elite and the forces arrayed against them, the more things seem to point to a single guiding intelligence. Nothing that has happened to her or her world is an accident. But the intrigue is only beginning, as Mira must fight for her very own survival, or embrace the dark space that threatens to consume her.
Don't miss the entire Sentients of Orion series: DARK SPACE, CHAOS SPACE, MIRROR SPACE, TRANSFORMATION SPACE.
Scary and screepy.....
The Fever struck hard and fast, rising out of the slums and claiming victim after victim. At first, reports trickled across the wire in small segments relegated to the final seconds of the broadcast news. Lost among stories of failing economies and political bickering, few noticed what proved to be the birth pangs of a monster. Within months, the disease dominated the news as thousands died and infection rates soared.
William Hill knew his chances of avoiding the virus sat squarely between slim and none. With experts predicting a global pandemic, his choices boiled down to not if, but where he would die. While the rest of the world built barricades and set up distribution points for food, he chose a simpler end. The island had been one of the last and best times with his father. He couldn’t think of a better place to spend his final days.
He wanted sun and sand, fresh fish on the grill and cool nights by the campfire. He wanted feel-good days filled with oldies on the radio, days when he could hoist the sails and run before the wind. He didn’t set out to make enemies, but he did. He didn’t plan on becoming humanity’s last hope for survival, or watching over an old woman and an eerie little boy either.
To William Hill, the island seemed as good a place as any to die.
He just didn’t realize how good.

He’s certain Maddy is jumping at shadows because the local kids call the house haunted. That is until he witnesses horrific violence he can't explain. Great novella, can't wait for more
At long last, the third installment in the Andrew Z. Thomas series and prequel to Crouch's and Konrath's thriller STIRRED...
Somehow, Luther Kite has found them.
Following the events of DESERT PLACES and LOCKED DOORS, Andy Thomas and Violet King are hiding out in the wilds of northern Canada, where Violet has a four-month-old son and a burgeoning romance with Andy. On a cold, rainy night at their cabin in the woods, the promise of an idyllic life that seems just around the corner is shattered when a man from their past, a monster of pure malevolence, returns. What he has in store for them will challenge their understanding of evil and stretch the fibers of their love to the breaking point.
"Break You" is a novella, continuing the story of Andrew Thomas. There is almost a surreal quality about this book - vivid descriptive passages (as in all of Crouch's books) describing the empty factories and homes in the barren landscapes of car assembly graveyards.
A stay-up-all-night thriller
LOCKED DOORS is Blake Crouch's second novel; his first, DESERT PLACES.
I began reading LOCKED DOORS at 10:00 p.m. on a Monday evening, and kept reading until I was too tired to hold the book properly. Crouch quite simply is a marvel. He changes perspective, points of view, and tense at whim, challenging you to hang on and ride with him. And it's easy to do. He's so good you'll want to hug him because you love him or smack him because you're jealous; sometimes you want to do both, simultaneously.
I'll give you an example. LOCKED DOORS involves, among other things, a gentleman named Luther Kite who is as dangerous and fearsome as anyone you could meet. One of the best passages in the book concerns a visit Kite pays to a Waffle House, where he orders pancakes. You know that either it'll turn out okay or he'll be painting the walls, but you're not sure which. I guarantee you though that if you read LOCKED DOORS you'll visit a Waffle House, just once, to see if Luther Kite is there. You won't be able to resist; Crouch's descriptive powers are that finely honed. Then there's another scene, darn near perfect, where Kite goes into a Wal-Mart...
New Talent, New Blood, A Roller Coaster Ride
The first installment in the Andrew Z. Thomas Series and a prequel to Crouch's and Konrath's thriller STIRRED...
Greetings. There is a body buried on your property, covered in your blood. The unfortunate young lady's name is Rita Jones. In her jeans pocket you'll find a slip of paper with a phone number on it. Call that number. If I have not heard from you by 8:00 P.M., the police will receive an anonymous call. I'll tell them where Rita Jones is buried on your property, how you killed her, and where the murder weapon can be found in your house. (I do believe a paring knife is missing from your kitchen.) I strongly advise against going to the police, as I am always watching you.
Andrew Z. Thomas is a successful writer of suspense thrillers, living the dream at his lake house in the piedmont of North Carolina. One afternoon in late spring, he receives a bizarre letter that eventually threatens his career, his sanity, and the lives of everyone he loves. A murderer is designing his future, and for the life of him, Andrew can't get away.
Dear Reader: Please keep the light on tonight. What happens next will scare you. Guaranteed.
If you like endings that never seem to end, this one book you must read.
Blake Crouch has written one captivating mystery with
"Abandon". In 1893 the entire town of Abandon disappears under
mysterious circumstances and then 116 years later, a team of explorers go to
the town to do some research and take photos. When two of the guides are
attacked in front of the rest of the group, the mystery becomes even more
mysterious. Alternating between the two time periods, Crouch has the reader
watch as events unfold in the past, and how the tension builds up as we
discover what the real reason these people are here. I, at first, was
skeptical, thinking this was a supernatural type of story but was completely
and happily surprised that this was as suspenseful thriller based on greed.
Great book.
The Last Town
Blake Crouch Expertly Finishes Wayward Pines Series with "The Last Town"
I have been a fan of Blake Crouch for a few years now. If you spend any time looking around this blog, you'll see me going on and on about his outstanding thriller RUN, which I think is still one of the best thriller/suspense novels of all time.
Crouch manages to get you care about characters while pacing his novels at break-neck speed. The intensity of each novel, even ones in a series, manage to ratchet up the tension until you are ready to explode. If you are reading it in paperback, you cannot turn the pages fast enough, and if you are reading it digitally, the one-tenth of a second it takes for the device to go to the next page feels like an eternity.
Crouch followed up RUN with the novel PINES. It told the story of Secret Service agent Ethan Burke who wants up in the strange town of Wayward Pines. It seems like the perfect town, set high in the mountains, and he was sent there to find a missing agent, but things are not what they seem. To tell you much more is to spoil the plot and that would be a shame.
The second novel in the series was entitled Wayward Pines and it was also brilliant, but if you haven't read the first one, I can't tell you a damn thing about the second. Suffice it to say, the action was intense, the drama was brilliant and the story was breathtaking in scope and speed.
Now, as Wayward Pines is set to become a Fox Network TV mini-series, Crouch finishes his trilogy with The Last Town. Once again, Crouch proves that he is one of the best thriller/suspense writers out there. The novel is truly un-put-downable. I finished it in just over a day. It picks up right where the second novel leaves off and many, many exciting, terrifying and thrilling things happen. None of it I can really tell you about without a huge SPOILERS alert, and I hate writing that, so I am not going to do it.
Seriously, if you love action, terror, mystery and heart-stopping suspense then you need to read the Wayward Pines trilogy. Trust me, you'll be into them so fast that you'll read all three in less than a week. You will not regret it and, if you are like me, you will be anxious to see how they transfer this one to TV.
Today I will talk about mystery and thriller books
A thriller provides the sudden
rush of emotions, excitement, and exhilaration that drive the narrative,
sometimes subtly with peaks and lulls, sometimes at a constant, breakneck pace.
It keeps the audience on the "edge of their seats", akin to a
sensation of hanging from a cliff, as the plot builds towards a climax.
Mystery
fiction is a genre of
fiction typically
focused on the investigation of a crime. Mystery fiction is often used as a
synonym fordetective fiction or crime fiction—in
other words a novel or short story in which a detective (either
professional or amateur) investigates and solves a crime mystery. Sometimes
mystery books are nonfictional.
"Mystery fiction" can be detective stories in which the emphasis is
on the puzzle or suspense element and its logical solution such as a whodunit.
Mystery fiction can be contrasted with hardboiled detective stories, which focus on
action and gritty realism.
Mystery fiction may involve a supernatural or thriller mystery where the solution does not
have to be logical, and even no crime involved
- Anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown
- Any affair, thing, or person that presents features or qualities so obscure as to arouse curiosity orspeculation
- A novel, short story, play, or film whose plot involves a crime or other event that remains puzzlinglyunsettled until the very end
- Obscure, puzzling, or mysterious quality or character
- Any truth that is unknowable except by divine revelation.

Excellent Device!
` I have had the Fire TV up and running for a few days now.
Thus far it has been a fantastic device!
It is so much faster than the app on my Sony TV.
We have watched a few movies and TV episodes on it and it never buffers, does not have to check the connection speed, nothing, it just instantaneously starts!
The RF remote is great, doesn't need line of sight and the speak to search function has been flawless. It has never once failed to produce the correct results.
As of this date the Prime choices are clear and easy to find. Yes, a search just for Prime content would be nice, but I have not had an issue yet finding Prime content. In this regard, the Sony app is better, but not having to wait 5 minutes for the app to get on screen then struggle for 5 more typing in a search query on the remote is a blessing and a half.
Install was a breeze, setup took just a few minutes. The device, like the Apple TV is always on, so getting to content is as easy and quick as getting to the correct input, and touching a remote button.
Having both the Fire TV and the AppleTV, I prefer the Fire. This is mainly because of the content with being a Prime member. The AppleTV is mainly used to mirror the iPad to the TV now.
I would gladly purchase this device again, and likely will as gifts.

Say it, watch it
Works great with one critical flaw.
Setup was a no brainer. It required an update immediately so it did take about 15 minutes to have it in action but the process was very simple.
The image quality (movies and games) is excellent. I've tried several movies from Amazon Prime and they look and sound nearly Blu Ray quality as far as I can tell.
Navigation is very straightforward and it's generally easy to find anything you're looking for. Installation of games and apps goes very smoothly and generally pretty quickly.
Let Amazon bring to you the perfect gift...
